Spotlight: SDG Pictures

June 25th, 2013

If you haven't noticed yet, we have a new business on the video board! SDG Pictures is run by Jacob and Jordy Hake, some good friends of ours, and they've made some pretty hilarious videos! Their description says:

Based in Humansville, Missouri, SDG pictures is headed by Jacob and Jordy Hake, two brothers with a passion for making movies to glorify God. Although our portfolio so far consists of short comedies, we hope to broaden our scope as we grow.

They are another great example of young Christian filmmakers trying to make films to honor God. I look forward to seeing what they do in the future! Be sure to find them on the videoboard, or find them on their blog, Youtube, Facebook, or Google+!

Home Run - New Christian Film

For those of you who missed it in theaters in your town, or for those who want to see it again, we are now one month away from Home Run releasing on DVD. Home Run is available for pre-order on and will be released on July 23, 2013. If you haven't heard about the new christian film Home Run, the synopsis says:

Baseball all-star Cory Brand knows what it takes to win in the big leagues. But off the field, with memories of his past haunting him, his life is spiraling out of control.

Hoping to save her client's career and reputation after a DUI and a team suspension, Cory's agent sends him back to the small town where he grew up. Forced to coach the local youth baseball team and spend eight weeks in the only recovery program in town, Cory can't wait to return to his old life as quickly as possible.

As his young players help him experience the joy of the game, Cory discovers his need to find freedom from his past and hope for his future … and win back the love he left behind. With this unexpected second chance, Cory finds himself on a powerful journey of transformation and redemption.

Based on thousands of true stories, HOME RUN is a powerful reminder that with God, it's never too late … freedom is possible.

Unfortunately, I was unable to go to this movie in the few weeks it was playing in our area, so I look forward to getting the DVD of it after it comes out. Be sure to pre-order or buy your copy to support more Godly films like this one!

I stumbled across an interesting website a few months ago when trying to help my friend find the perfect sound effect for his video. While looking for a wheelbarrow sound effect, I came across, a free online sound library. While I have used many different sound effect websites, this one quickly caught my attention as it had exactly what I needed along with thousands of other sound effects. As best as I can tell, they have over 170,000 different free sound effects on their site, with almost every sound you can imagine! All you have to do is create a free account, and you have access to download any of the sound effects under the Creative Commons license. Any new Christian filmmaker looking for the perfect sound effect should be sure to check out this amazingly useful site.

Hope everyone had a great Father's Day!

New Movies Update - June

June 15, 2013

If you haven't yet checked out our "New Movies" section, now would be a great time to do so. This section hopes to encompass upcoming movies, and newly released movies. It gives information about the film with a synopsis, release date, etc. If you've seen one of the films, be sure to review it and give your opinion on the film! Some of the newly added movies for June include:

Out of the Darkness - Senator Jonah Thomas is the young vision of hope among a senate filled with disillusionment, greed, corruption and apathy. He puts in the long hours laboring on a strategy to make a difference when he is summoned to a private meeting at the penthouse of the historic Artisan Hotel with a few of his colleagues.

Unbeknownst to them, the FBI is carefully monitoring their meeting from a nearby room -- thanks to a tip from a rival senator. But before the meeting can even take place, a violent explosion erupts on the floor of the penthouse.

Somewhere in the debris lies Jonah, who is now half dead, caught between our world and the spiritual world. He is in a place where angels and demons battle for his soul in one dimension and terrorist and FBI agents battle for his life on another.

Wait Till It's Free! - Wait Till It's Free is an upcoming provocative documentary film that takes a hard and honest look at the way we do healthcare in America. The film looks at everything from the escalating cost of health insurance to the move towards the disaster of socialized medicine.

Ace Wonder - A typical day in Willow, pouring rain. It always rains in times like this. A man told me that heaven was crying that day. Maybe so. But heaven's tears were cold. So many stories begin with a dead man, it's become a cliche. A dark alley, a smoking gun, and a thousand lingering memories remain to haunt us. But this time, there was no smoking gun, no dark alley, only those unanswered questions. It might have frightened the average kid, but not me. I live for this sort of thing. My name's Ace Wonder, P.I., and I'm about to take on my first real case.

Are we missing a movie? Please Let us know about it!

Interview: Danny Carrales

June 13, 2013

A modern retelling of Pilgrim's Progress directed by Danny Carrales

Today, we present to you our very first interview on CFC! A few weeks ago, I got to meet Danny Carrales, a Christian filmmaker with DRC Films, LLC. He's an incredibly encouraging man and it was a blessing to get to meet him. He was kind enough to be willing to do an interview for the blog, and he has some very interesting things to say.

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about how you went into the film industry and about DRC Films?

A: I felt lead by God to make evangelistic movies that could be shown around the world during my senior year in high school.

In order to develop my craft, I went to the University of Texas in Austin for my undergraduate
degree in film. The UT film school is one of the top in the nation. There I shot my first evangelistic
movies, even though never received distribution, I learned a lot and was able to use them to share
Jesus with my classmates and professors and anyone else that came to watch our movies during
student movie night. While attending UT, I was involved in Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship, which helped me grow in my faith, while attending a secular university.

In order to develop my film making skills even further, I attended Regent University (a Christian
film school) in Virginia Beach, VA for my M.A. in Communications. It was at Regent that I met like minded film students and professors and I really enjoyed my time honing my skills there.

While at Regent, I was able to find a lot of free lance work at the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), which was just another wonderful opportunity to learn from working professionals. There I was given directing jobs, which lead to more directing jobs.

Eventually, I worked for ministries such as Blue Fish TV and companies like New Day Pictures. Living like a college student, I managed to save enough money to direct and produce my first movie, Final Exit, which led to saving money to produce The Gathering (which was a modest hit).

Taking income from Final and Gathering, I directed and produced Escape From Hell, which became a hit movie in the Christian community.

All my movies have been a financial faith walk. Our new movie, Out of the Darkness is no exception. Out of the Darkness is very, very ambitious.

Q:What has been your favorite thing about making Christian films?

A: Making a movie that God can use for His glory is the best thing about making Christian movies. I have personally seen over a thousand people go forward to surrender their lives to Jesus after showings of our movies at churches and festivals. We know that there have been thousands upon thousands of people around the world that have surrendered their lives to Jesus after viewing our movies.

Q:Why did you decide to make films that were overtly Christian?

A: I feel that is what God has called me to do -- to present the Gospel without any mystery. I want to present the Truth (His Word) and allow God to use it.

Q:Can you talk some about the movie you are working on now?

A:It's a supernatural thriller about how everything we say and do will one day be brought to life. God is going to hold us accountable one day and I'm praying that people who watch the movie will want to walk closer to Jesus.

Q:When is it expected to come out?

A:It's June 11th and I thought we would be finished months ago. There are over 1500 effects and it's taking a lot longer than we anticipated. Prayerfully, we'll complete the movie in September of 2013.

Q:What is your favorite movie and why?

A:I like a lot of movies -- from action movies to comedies.

Q:What is the biggest challenge in making a Christian film?

A:The biggest challenge in producing a Christian film is making a story that God can use for His glory.
Another challenge is working with very limited budgets, however, that helps you get on your knees before God -- the only One that can help you get through the journey.

Q:What advice would you have for young people aspiring to be a Christian filmmaker?

A:Seek God in all that you do, develop your craft as a story teller and don't be afraid of taking on a challenge that only God can see you through.

A special thanks again to Mr. Carrales for taking the time to answer these questions for us. To find out more about Danny Carrales or DRC Films, go to Also, who would you like us to interview next? Email us or let us know in the comments! We should have a few more interviews coming up very soon. Stay tuned!

Spotlight: Blender

Blender Bob the Tomato 3D
A "Bob the Tomato" in Blender...

One of the things that we want to do on this blog is recommend programs to new filmmakers to utilize in their projects. One such program that I came across a few years ago is Blender, a 3d rendering software. With Blender, you can make 3-dimensional objects and characters and animate footage with them. Blender has many incredible features, and has the capability to produce very polished images for your animation. The best thing about Blender is by far the price. While some 3D programs can run you thousands of dollars, Blender is completely free. It does require a lot of learning (as you can tell by my crudely-made Bob the Tomato up top), but if you invest the time and energy into learning the software, you can truly do amazing things with this program.

Here is a video made in Blender to give you an idea of the quality of the software:

Big Buck Bunny - Created in Blender

Here are a few more shots of things made in Blender:
